Shifting a message in a city

Drive through a city and notice the billboards. The dominating message will tell what is ruling the city. Pictures and art tell the story in a home just like children’s posters reveal their hearts. Flags, banners, and bandanas declare a belief system, an ideology, which has found a footing in an area. Just like the armies of the American Civil War, the red coats and the blue coats, people will wear colors, names, or clothing to publicly signify what they support. Lastly, our lives broadcast a message, that is, as long as we can be seen in public (and outside of a church building).

Times of crisis draw out a truth about human nature. When we desire to get a message out, we parade the message. Right in the home, an arguing couple will forcibly parade their opinion seeking to establish their way of thinking. In America, the Ku Klux Klan would ride through the streets seeking to establish their belief system through fear. Later, the Civil Rights movement resisted and marched through the streets with a message of love. Love won. Ideals don’t always give up easily, but those with the highest moral ground will prevail if they endure.

One of the great secrets of changing a belief system is taking it to the streets. For years, small movements have marched the streets of America virtually uncontested. They have successfully shifted belief systems while those with higher moral ground slept.

Lions mark their territory by urinating. Man marks territory with their feet. If you want to know who is in charge in a room, find the one whose feet have the most freedom. If you want to see a belief system changed, you must take it to the streets (the pathways, the halls, the communication channels). Jesus did it. The prophets did it. Abraham and Joshua did it.

We are doing it, because God has beautiful plans for Oklahoma City. I encourage Christians in troubled home environments to peacefully walk the halls of their home and pray for (not against) those in their families. I encourage employees and business owners to quietly pray through the halls of their business while engaging co-workers with kindness and excellence. Whatever you do, don’t hide. I encourage Christians to do prayer walks in their neighborhoods and around their churches, engaging neighbors with kind words, acts of service, prayer, and friendship.

I invite you to help us declare God’s thoughts about one of the greatest pillars of society – marriage. If you are in central Oklahoma, join us at 10:00 AM on October 13th for our Stronger Together Covenant Walk as we trek 2.5 miles from downtown to the Oklahoma State Capitol. At our destination we will celebrate the gift of marriage, the gift of purity, and the gift of children at the first annual Celebrate Marriage Oklahoma event. We are stronger together.
